Assembly 2024 – A Celebration of Faith & Unity by Bro. I. Ezax Smith

The journey to the 2024 gathering of the Distant Members Fellowship of the S. Trowen Nagbe UMC, from August 29th to September 1st, 2024, required dedication and meticulous planning and culminated in Philadelphia, the City of Brotherly Love; it was an absolutely wonderful and exhilarating experience. Hosted by the Northeastern Region in a city known for its rich history, unity, and warm hospitality, the Assembly was a celebration of connection, filled with excitement, joy, and meaningful moments. The theme of the Assembly was “Celebrating Our Unforgettable Journey with a Faithful God” with text taken from Psalm 111:2-4.

On the first day of the Assembly, Logistics Coordinator, Momo Sambola warmly welcomed arriving members from various locations and escorted them to their respective places of lodging. As members continued to join the band of celebrants, there was an undeniable sense of belonging, as friends, who had long been separated by miles now found themselves in the same space, rekindling relationships, and reminiscing about old times. For everyone, it was a homecoming experience.

Opening Events

The Assembly sparked off with the Meet and Greet, on Thursday evening, August 29th at the Lift Africa, LLC Conference Hall. The evening was designed as an African Attire Night; everyone was dressed in a stunning array of stylish traditional African outfits.

The Assembly was officially declared open by the President, Dartor Bolo. Setting the tone for an evening of celebration and a weekend of excitement, he re-emphasized the DMF’s commitment to enhancing members’ welfare and strengthening ST Nagbe Church’s soul-winning capacity. He extended heartfelt thanks to members for their time, gifts, and services; because of them, the DMF is in ministry and bringing smiles to the faces of many. His remarks were followed by the head of the Northeastern Region, Sis. Annette Choko Kpoto, who extended warmhearted welcome to all. She was followed by the Chairman of the Board of Directors, Bro. I. Ezax Smith, whose words further stirred excitement and anticipation for the activities that lay ahead.

One of the most memorable highlights of the evening came when the Northeastern Region leadership team and members made their grand entrance, showcasing a fabulous display of unity as members of the region, adorned in a beautiful combination of matching lappas, took to the stage in a colorful procession that captivated the audience.

On Friday, continuing the camaraderie from the day before, the business session was called to order. The Constitution Review Committee report was presented by Rev. Henry Dolopei, and after discussions, was adopted by the General Assembly. The Finance Committee report was also presented by the Finance Committee chairperson Dwanah S. Dwanah and accepted by the body.

Another major highlight of Friday was the first round of the King & Queen Contest, where participants vied for the prestigious DMF Crowns.

Hawaiian Day Celebration

Earlier on Friday, prior to the evening business session, members enjoyed the highly anticipated Hawaiian Day in Atlantic City, a perfect escape to soak up the sun and enjoy some fun-filled moments by the sea. After breakfast at Annette’s home, all participants, dressed in vibrant Hawaiian attire, gathered, and boarded the 4 buses, generously provided by the Northeastern Region, and headed to Atlantic City Beach. The drive to the beach was filled with cheerful chatter, lighthearted laughter, and jovial excitement, as delegates made their way to the coastline, eager to relax and enjoy the soothing beach atmosphere.

It was indeed a fun-filled day in the sun. Participants spent their time lounging on the beach, dipping their toes in the refreshing water, playing beach volleyball, building sandcastles, taking a leisurely stroll along the shore, and enjoying friendly competitions. Mercy Sampson and Weahyonnoh Nelson-Davies won the dancing competition. The relaxed setting allowed everyone to bond, let go of their daily stresses, and create lasting memories.
The after-party or after-beach munch-on at Salomie Gimeh’s home was the perfect end to an already amazing day. Everyone gathered at Sis. Gimeh’s home, where the true spirit of Liberian hospitality was on full display.
Sis. Gimeh, alongside a few other members that included Sis. Madia Bengue Smith, went above and beyond to prepare a mouthwatering spread of traditional Liberian dishes like Palm Butter and Rice, Torgborgee, and the famous Fufu and Pepper Soup, a hearty, flavorful dish that had everyone going back for seconds.

Saturday

Saturday morning’s business session focused on the fellowship’s progress, future initiatives, and strengthening the bonds between members. The day began with a motivational sermon by Pastor Natt Miller. His inspiring words encouraged members to push beyond their limits and make a meaningful impact on the world. He emphasized the importance of striving for excellence and making a difference. The DMF memorialized and paid heartfelt tribute to their fallen members by acknowledging the contributions they made while they were with us and prayed for strength and comfort for their relatives. The session was both informative and engaging, setting the tone for two important mini conferences for the men and the women.

One of the standout moments of the morning was the grand reception of new members attending the Assembly for the first time. In a lovely display of brotherly love and collegiality, these new members were ushered in with a ceremonial march as they took their place among the fellowship. To make the occasion even more special, each new member was adorned with a Hawaiian lei, a garland of flowers draped around their necks, making everyone feel included and honored as they began their journey with the fellowship.

The outgoing Board Chair, Bro. Ezax Smith welcomed them into the fold of the fellowship, while Bro. Edward Harris, Jr. spoke on behalf of all the new members and expressed their gratitude and honor of being part of such a supportive community.

Other significant activities of Saturday morning included the expression of gratitude to members who went above and beyond in supporting the DMF. Each member was given a flower as a gesture of appreciation and encouraged them to continue doing good for mankind.

The President’s Report and the General Elections, both climaxed the activities of the business session for Saturday. In the President’s Report, Bro. Dartor Bolo shared a comprehensive update on the achievements, challenges, and future goals of the organization. His address was both inspiring and informative, highlighting the progress made during his first term and setting a clear vision for the future. His leadership and dedication to the fellowship were evident, and it was clear that the members valued his guidance and direction.

The General Elections followed, and the members gathered to make their selections for key leadership positions. The election process was smooth and conducted with great respect for the democratic principles of the fellowship. After careful consideration and a unanimous vote, Bro. Dartor Bolo was re-elected for his second term as President, a testament to the trust and confidence the members have in his leadership. Other elected officers included: Sis. Brenda O. Bedell, Vice President, Sis. Alice Domah, Secretary, Bro. Marvine B. Tchitche, Financial Secretary, Sis. Albertine A. Austine, Treasurer, and Sis. Olivia R. Browne, Chaplain.

In addition to the elected officers, a new Board of Directors was also chosen, reflecting the commitment to bringing fresh perspectives and new energy to the organization. Among the new members of the Board were: Bro. Dwanah S. Dwanah, Dr. Joyce Johnson Dolo, Sis. Sunniwaye Elizabeth Kelly, Rev. Dr. Kamah Thoronka, Mth. Viola M. Montgomery, and Fth. Samuel Wuo.

A Night of Glamour and Celebration

Saturday evening of the DMF General Assembly culminated in a spectacular coronation and awards ceremony at the elegant Heritage Ballroom. Members bedazzled in exquisite attire, strutting down the red carpet in style. It was a night of celebration, refinement, and joy, where everyone gathered to enjoy a formal dinner, dance, and continued to bond over the shared experiences of the weekend.

As the night unfolded, members were recognized for their dedication, service, and exemplary leadership. It was a heartwarming occasion, as those who had gone above and beyond in their commitment to the fellowship were honored for their tireless efforts.

The excitement then shifted to the grand finale of the King & Queen contest, which was the highlight of the evening. Bro. Teiwon Dolopei of the Central Region and Sis. Cecelia Dunn-Kai of the Northeastern Region captured the titles as King and Queen, respectively. They were both crowned and sashed in recognition of their roles as royals of the fellowship as they received well-deserved accolades from their fellow members.

Sunday Worship

The DMF General Assembly concluded on a high note with a divine worship service at Covenant United Methodist Church (Convent UMC), filled with praise and gratitude for a successful gathering. Members in attendance listened to an inspiring sermon, sang joyful music, and had a remarkable time of fellowship and bonding. Pastors from the fellowship including Reverends Alvin Cassell, Colton Morris, Henry Dolopei and Morris Jlakon, all assisted the host Pastor in the worship service as well as to administer communion. A chorale of over 75 members of the DMF rendered a heartfelt selection entitled, “With Christ on the Vessel, I Fear Not the Storm”.

After the service, Bro. Ezax Smith took to leading the fellowship through a series of familiar choruses, hymns, gospels, and contemporary music that transported the moment into a deep spiritual connection and renewal, reminiscent of the home spirit felt at S.T. Nagbe UMC in Monrovia, Liberia. The members of Covenant UMC stood in awe of the harmony of the singing as the voices blended as one, creating an atmosphere of reverence that filled the foyer of the sanctuary.

Farewell Cookout

The weekend came to a close with a farewell cookout at the home of Sis. Claudia Jargba and her family, offering one last opportunity for members to come together, enjoy each other’s company, and reflect on the unforgettable experiences of the previous few days.

As members started to say their goodbyes and head back to their respective destinations, a wave of bittersweet farewell swept over the group. There were hugs, smiles, and teary eyes, as everyone savored the last moments together. It was hard to say goodbye, knowing how much the weekend meant to everyone, but as the saying goes, “All good things must come to an end.” Yet, the connections made, and the memories created would linger far beyond the final moments of the gathering.

More Than a Weekend Gathering

It was more than just a gathering weekend; it was a reunion of hearts, a celebration of shared experiences, and a gala of collective growth.

It can be stated with confidence that each delegate, each member, and each attendee at this Assembly left this gathering with an overwhelming feeling of gratitude and anticipation for future reunions. We say hats-off to the leadership and all members of the fellowship who worked to plan, execute, support, and sponsor the Assembly to a stunning success.

The true highlight was the unmistakable sense of joy, as old friendships were rekindled, and new connections were made. It wasn’t just the joy of the moment that lingered; it was the realization that the ties that bind were stronger than ever, and that the journey of fellowship and brotherhood would continue to thrive long after the gathering ended. It was a reminder that no matter how far apart we may be, the bonds of love, faith, and brotherhood will always bring us together. It was truly a celebration of an unforgettable journey with a faithful God. The connection of the hearts in the heart of the City of Brotherly Love and Sisterly Affection was grounded in faith and unity; it was truly one for the ages.
